Riding Out The Worst Weather

All Floridians come to know and understand that we have five seasons in lower Florida. We go through Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer, and then Hurricane season usually hits Florida right where it hurts. When it passes, we have an Autumn that feels like a breezy summer and a winter that feels like a cold Autumn.

When hurricanes come to call, you must protect what you can by shuttering windows and sealing doors where possible. Keep a slightly larger stock of provisions in case of panic-buying from the crowd. When most people realize they should be stocking up on supplies, they are already facing panic-stricken shoppers snatching up anything and everything. Water and toilet paper are usually the first to go.

We usually see a big upswing in car repairs just before a hurricane hits, as people leave problems for too long until they’re in a slightly desperate situation. It’s so much better-- and cheaper-- to maintain your car with preventive maintenance, then to hastily fix things before the storms come inland.

We must learn to forgive others for recklessness borne out of panic. You never know what another person’s struggle is until you walk a mile in their shoes. And we’re meant as Ocalans to come together and survive together. The best we can do is to remember to stay stocked and be good neighbors where we can. You can be on point for your family and still have the kind of moderation that shows respect for others in your community.

This month’s Partner is the Ocala Business Leaders. We’re proud to work with the Ocala Business Leaders to help build a better, kinder, cleaner city every day. If your business isn’t already a member, consider joining and supporting us in our efforts to keep Ocala vital and beautiful.
